Troubleshooting

A board lists its current problems in a banner at the top of its page. This page covers each one, and some other common symptoms.

Problems the page shows

The board has no Ethernet link. Check the cable and the switch port. On the M5Stack unit, check that the port supplies PoE (802.3at).

USB audio adapter not connected

No USB audio adapter is in the host port, or the board didn't recognize it. Check that it is a USB Audio Class 1.0 adapter with a 48 kHz mode, plugged into the right port (see requirements), without a hub.

USB serial adapter not connected / USB device not connected

The serial server or USB/IP server has nothing in its host port. Plug the device straight into the board: hubs are not supported.

PTP offset over 1 ms

The board's clock is more than 1 ms from the master's. This is normal for a few seconds after a board starts or the master changes. If it lasts, check that the boards are on one VLAN and that Energy Efficient Ethernet is off (see network). After 60 seconds the board restarts.

No audio arriving from …

The decoder is routed to a group but nothing is arriving. Check that:

  • the encoder is up, and its Multicast group and RTP port match
  • the switch has IGMP snooping with a querier on this VLAN
  • the board and the encoder are on the same VLAN

The decoder rejoins the group every 30 seconds by itself.

… also sends to this stream's group

On an encoder: another sender uses its multicast group and port. The encoder moves to a free group by itself, so this clears within seconds. When the other sender is an EtherJax encoder with a higher IP address, that one moves instead, and this encoder waits up to 3 minutes for it before moving itself. See encoders.

… also sends to … (ignored)

On a decoder: packets from a second sender are arriving on its group. The decoder plays only the sender it was routed to and ignores the rest. The other sender is usually another device set to the same group. An EtherJax encoder moves off it by itself; change the group on any other device.

Network sends failing

The encoder can't send its stream. Check the link, and the board's IP settings if it uses a static address.

Degraded: stopped rebooting after 3 tries

The board restarted 3 times for the same kind of fault without fixing it, so it has stopped restarting. Fix the other problem listed with it. It clears after 10 minutes without the fault, or when you restart the board. See health and self-healing.

Other symptoms

A stream is marked "not synced to this clock"

The stream's announcement names a different PTP master from the decoder's, so they won't play in step. Usually a Dante device isn't in AES67 mode, or the boards and that device are on different VLANs. See clocks.

A stream doesn't appear under Available streams

Encoders announce about every 30 seconds. Check that the encoder has Announce with SAP ticked, and that both boards are on the same VLAN.

Clicks or dropouts

Look at the decoder's Stream panel. If Late / bad keeps rising, raise the link offset: Link offset (ms) for an EtherJax encoder's stream, Link offset, other senders (ms) for any other. If Missing audio rises, packets are being lost or arriving just too late: raise the link offset, and check the switch, IGMP snooping and Energy Efficient Ethernet.

Can't reach the board by name

etherjax-XXXX.local needs mDNS, which doesn't cross routers. Use the board's IP address from your DHCP server's leases, or the serial log.
